In Oravi we have our own rules! *

Welcome to the Oravi homepage!

Oravi is an idyllic waterfront village in the heart of the Saimaa Lake District of Eastern Finland. We are 45 minutes by car from the regional town of Savonlinna.  Varkaus is located is 60 km by road.  Our village is on the major waterway routes between Savonlinna, Varkaus, Heinävesi and Kuopio.

Oravi is between the villages of Ahvensalmi and Juvola. The local school is in Juvola, which offers pre-school classes as well as full time education for 7 to 13 year olds. Our school has three teachers, and an assistant. The school is also open in the afternoon and evenings for out of school activities.

Oravi has a permanent population of 150, but this increases when people come to spend time in their summer cottages. The population swells again with the arrival of recreational sailors and tourists. The summer tourist season begins as soon as the ice has melted in early May, with the first paddlers and camps run for school groups arriving to enjoy the natural surroundings of the lake. The summer season continues with canoeing, boating, biking, hiking and fishing until September. An important Winter tourism attraction is skating. A skating trail is maintained on the frozen lake between Oravi and Rantasalmi during the winter. Skating the circular track (that is equal to an Olympic marathon) is much easier than running the same distance!  Oravi and neighbouring villages have numerous clubs and local skating and skiing facilities. Many of these associations have their own webpages where you can find more information.

* This is an Oravi saying that reflects our autonomy and independence. Self-reliance is a great source of pride for Oravians!
